The ex-husband of an American woman fatally stabbed in an Abu Dhabi shopping mall says he is grateful that United Arab Emirates authorities quickly arrested the suspected "monster" who killed his wife and says he feels safe there.

Kindergarten teacher Ibolya Ryan, 47, was found stabbed to death Dec. 1 in a bloody bathroom in the high-end Reem Island mall. Police detained a suspect Thursday, a woman they say hours later attempted to plant a bomb near the home of an American physician. The bomb was dismantled without incident.

UAE officials say the woman was targeting foreigners, but has no apparent link to a terrorist group or political party.

"This monster was lying in wait for someone like her to come along — for an hour — in the bathroom," Ryan's former husband, Paul, told NBC News. "Unfortunately, it was my kids' mother."

The UAE news agency WAM, citing an unidentified security source, said the suspect appeared to have been acting alone. The source told WAM the woman, whose name has not been revealed, had recently logged into some terrorist websites "through which she acquired the terrorism ideology and learned how to manufacture explosives."

Ibolya Ryan was living in Abu Dhabi with the couple's 11-year-old twin sons. Paul Ryan, who lives in Vienna, Austria, with his 13-year-old daughter, has been in Abu Dhabi since the murder.

"I'm totally horrified by what happened," Paul Ryan told CNN. "However, I'm starting to believe what my ex-wife was always telling me — that it's safe here."

Police said the suspect, nicknamed the "Reem Island ghost," wore a black robe and a full-face veil. The murder came a little more than a month after the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi warned Americans of an online posting that encouraged attacks against teachers at American and other international schools in the Middle East. It was not clear, however, if the attack was related to the warning.

Ryan told WAM and CNN that UAE authorities handled the investigation in a professional manner and have been treating the family very well. He said he will remain with his boys in Abu Dhabi so they can complete their school year, then his family will return to the United States.

"When I got here, I had some preconceptions about how the situation would be," Ryan told WAM. "My doubts were dispelled. I felt that the forces of darkness and terrorism that expressed themselves very clearly here in the Middle East will disappear with time, thanks to the forces of good that I saw here."

UAE woman gets death penalty for killing U.S. teacher

By Staff writer Al Arabiya News Monday, 29 June 2015

A United Arab Emirates court sentenced an Emirati woman to death on Monday after convicting her of the jihadist-inspired murder of an American teacher, Abu Dhabi newspaper The National reported.

Alaa Bader al-Hashemi was found guilty of stabbing to death teacher Ibolya Ryan, 47, in a shopping mall toilet, as well as "creating a handmade bomb" she placed in front of an Egyptian-American doctor's home, the paper said.

The ruling was made by the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi, which means it cannot be appealed.

The attacks took place within hours of each other in the UAE capital on December 1. Hashemi was arrested by Abu Dhabi CID during a raid at her home three days after the incident.

Hashemi "was also found guilty of sending money to Al-Qaeda in Yemen, knowing the funds would be used in terrorist acts," The National said.

Hashemi, surrounded by four police officers, "showed no emotion as the verdict and sentence were announced," the daily said.

"As she was led from court she smiled and waved at her father and brother, who were in court to witness the proceedings."

International media have been denied access to her trial. which began in March.

Hashemi had asked the court to provide her with psychological help, saying she had "unreal visions" and would see "ghost-like people" due to a chronic mental illness.

The court ordered psychiatric tests which it said showed she was aware of her actions.

A murderess mum-of-six known as the Reem Island Ghost has been executed by firing squad for the brutal stabbing of an American teacher.

Alaa Al Hashemi was shot on Monday morning at dawn after killing Ibolya Ryan in an Abu Dhabi toilet stall.

The 30-year-old was also convicted of bomb-making and sending money to Al Qaeda in Yemen, knowing that would be used to fund terrorist acts.

The execution went ahead after being approved by President Sheikh Khalifa, report The National.

Mohammed Al Kaabi, chairman of the UAE Human Rights Society, said the speedy execution of the death sentence made a statement to any would-be terrorists.

He said: “The execution today sends a strong message to terrorists worldwide that the UAE is a red line that you don’t cross."

The sick killer was said to be calm as the judge told her she would be executed by firing squad following a trial lasting almost three months.

She even reportedly smiled and waved at her father and brother as she was led away.

Chilling CCTV footage earlier showed Al Hashemi - dressed head to toe in a traditional Arabic robe, a veil and black gloves - entering the shopping centre.

She is seen heading to the the bathroom where she subjected Ms Ryan - mum of 11-year-old twins - to a frenzied attack with a large kitchen knife, before running out, causing panic among shoppers.

Just over an hour after fleeing the mall following the stabbing, she planted a primitive bomb outside the house of an Arab-American doctor living in the city.

Fortunately, police were alerted before the device went off.

Al Hashemi was arrested within 48 hours of the crime was reported.

Images released later show the blood-soaked scene in the mall's toilet, while further dramatic footage shows Al Hashemi's arrest.

Paul Ryan, the victim’s former husband, said: “We pray that justice has been served today.
"Nothing will return the beautiful and delightful mother of my children.

“But if today’s verdict raises awareness and dissuades another so filled with hate to reconsider, to still her hand, something of worth will yet be salvaged from this horror, the remains of which my family bears day by day.”

During her trial, Al Hashemi claimed she suffered from a mental illness and was “possessed by evil spirits” that gave her “unreal visions” during which she’s seen “ghost-like people.”

Ahmed Al Dhanhani, Attorney General for the State Security Prosecution, has announced that on Monday morning, July 13, 2015, the ruling of The State Security Circuit of the Federal Supreme Court No. 73 of 2015 on the execution of Alaa Bader Abdullah has been carried out, following the approval of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Earlier, the Public Prosecution had charged the accused with murdering Ibolya Ryan, an American citizen, whom the defendant deliberately stabbed to death, with an intention to kill, and of seeking to stir fear among those living in an apartment in one of the buildings along the Abu Dhabi Corniche.

The accused tried to detonate a homemade bomb near the door of the apartment with the intention of killing all the tenants, but it did not explode.

She was also accused of illegally collecting prohibited explosive materials and of having assembled these without a licence.

She was also convicted of having established and managed an e-mail account with a false name to disseminate activities of the terrorist organisations.

She also published information with an intent to harm the reputation and prestige of the State and its symbols.

She also provided funds to a terrorist organisation with the prior knowledge that the funds would be used in committing terrorist operations.

The accused committed these crimes to spread terror and with an intent to cause death and provoke terror among the people and threaten the State's security.

OUR THOUGHTS:
We, the comrades of Unit 1012, do not want the people to forget how Ryan lived on this earth, though she was murdered, do not focus on how she died but remember her life as a teacher. Thank God that justice was served when the killer was executed only 7 months after the crime, we thank the UAE Justice System for their Counter-terrorism Law.

If you read about the case of the Reem Island Ghost, she was only executed 7 months after the crime, justice was swift and sure. Another lesson to learn here was that the UAE Police did a great job in arresting the suspect. We hope the United States can learn something from here in countering terrorism and also speeding up executions.
