Victim’s family supports planned execution of Navajo on death row

The family of Alyce Slim and her 9-year-old granddaughter, wants their killer to be executed. We, the members of Unit 1012: The VFFDP, supports their decision. We urge the public to empathize and sympathize with them and to ignore the ACLU types who supporting the rights of murderers.

The family of Alyce Slim and her nine-year-old granddaughter have issued a statement through their attorney stating they support the execution of the man who brutally murdered the pair.

Krista Wood with the Arizona Voice for Crime Victims sent a brief statement on Friday morning that said surviving Family members support the execution of Lezmond Mitchell, currently scheduled for Aug. 26.

Mitchell was convicted in 2003 and was sentenced to death. He was convicted of the 2001 carjacking and brutal killings of Slim, 63, and her nine-year-old granddaughter.

Slim’s vehicle was used in a robbery of a trading post. He is scheduled to be executed this coming Wednesday at the U.S. Penitentiary, a high-security federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

“Mr. Mitchell’s attorneys or advocates and the Navajo Nation do not speak for these victims and have not accurately expressed their wishes as it relates to imposition of sentence upon Mr. Mitchell,” the family statement read.

A 2004 Navajo Nation Council Public Safety Committee report that was presented at the 20th Navajo Nation Council Summer Session stated the victims’ family, at the time, opposed Mitchell’s death sentence.

The report stated Marlene Slim had told the committee “she was a victim of homicide because both her mother and daughter were murdered in the mountains of Tsaile, Arizona.” The report added Marlene stated, if the tribe opted in, it would “diminish the sovereignty of the Navajo Nation.”

“Her request to the federal prosecutor to have the murderer of her mother and her daughter serve life without parole was ignored and dishonored,” the 2004 committee report stated.

Navajo Nation Council Delegate Carl R. Slater (Round Rock, Lukachukai, Rock Point, Tsaile/Wheatfields, Tsé Ch’izhí) said on Friday the Council has not received any statement from the victims’ family that would indicate they have switched their position.

“I had hoped to not re-traumatize the victims. It pains me that that has occurred,” Slater said.

Even if the family does support the execution, It does not change the relationship between the Navajo Nation and the federal government, Slater added.

“The Navajo Nation never opted in to impose the death penalty,” he said. “It is not the decision of one person or one group of family to make the decision.”

Slater introduced legislation opposing Mitchell’s execution. Slater said the federal government is overstepping its authority and ignoring the sovereignty of the tribe, which traditionally opposes the death penalty,

“The United States made a commitment to the Navajo Nation in the Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994,” Slater was quoted in an Aug. 13 Navajo Nation Council press release.

“If this execution goes forward, the precedent will be set that, no matter the sovereign position of any Indian tribe, the federal government can kill American Indians and Diné, specifically. While this is a justice issue, this precedent will only add another chink in the nation’s sovereign armor.”

Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez sent a signed letter to President Donald Trump on July 31, asking for leniency for Mitchell.

“The United States Department of Justice sought the death penalty against Mr. Mitchell despite the Navajo Nation’s public opposition, against the express wishes of the victim’s family, and ostensibly against the recommendation of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona,” the July 31 letter to Trump read.

Mitchell petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday asking to delay his execution so he can be given a chance to interview the jury that sentenced him to death. U.S. District Court in Arizona denied his request on Aug. 13.

Mitchell, 38, is the only Native American who is awaiting an Aug. 26 execution date at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana. No time has been set. He has maintained the mostly white jury was biased against him because of his race.

Bob Sayre: God Demands Capital Punishment for All Murders!

God Demands Capital Punishment for All Murders!

  • There is a big difference between “murder” and “killing.”
  • The Bible actually says: "You shall not murder.”
  • God commanded His people to kill His enemies and purge evil/sin.
  • The government has the God given right to execute a murder.
  • Check it out as the Bereans did after Paul’s teaching.
Contrary to what many Christians believe, the Bible clearly states that anyone who murders another person must forfeit their life. However, there is a big difference between “murder” and “killing” someone. Webster defines murder as: “the crime of unlawfully killing a person esp. with malice aforethought.” Kill is defined as: “to deprive of life.”

Killing in wartime and for self-defense has been accepted throughout history. God has commanded killing in order purge evil from the land.

The Bible actually says: Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder.” However, God’s commandment distinguishes between killing and murder.  In all Bible translations except for the “King James Version” They use the word murder rather than kill. The Roman Catholics church and some Christian denominations still teach that the commandment means to not kill any human being. Killing in wartime and for self-defense has been accepted throughout history. God has commanded killing in order purge evil from the land.

Throughout the Old Testament, God commanded His people to kill His enemies and purge evil/sin from the land. This included the killing of men, women and children that He wanted eliminated from the earth:
  1. Deuteronomy 20:16-17 “However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 17 Completely destroy[a] them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you.
  2. 1 Samuel 2-3 “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys”.
  3. 1st Samuel 15:19 “And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.’”
C.S. Lewis had the best explanation of killing in war vs. murder. “Does loving your enemy mean not punishing him? No, for loving myself does not mean that I ought not to subject myself to punishment—even to death. If you had committed a murder, the right Christian thing to do would be to give yourself up to the police and be hanged. It is, therefore, in my opinion, perfectly right for a Christian judge to sentence a man to death or a Christian soldier to kill an enemy. I always have thought so, ever since I became a Christian, and long before the war, and I think so now that we are at peace. It is no good quoting ‘thou shall not kill.’ There are two Greek words: the ordinary word to kill and the word to murder. And when Christ quotes that commandment He uses the murder one in all three accounts, Matthew, Mark, and Luke. … All killing is not murder any more that all sexual intercourse is adultery.

Jesus never suggested that serving in the military was against God’s will.

Jesus never suggested that serving in the military was against God’s will. When a Roman Centurion came to him for healing of one of his servants, Jesus healed the servant and praised him because of his faith. Matthew 8:10 “When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” Later Cornelius, another Roman Centurion, was greeted by an angle who praised Cornelius. Peter visited his home and witnessed the Holy Spirit being poured out on Cornelius’ family. Acts 10:22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.”

The Bible is clearly in favor of taking the life of a murderer:
  1. Genesis 9:6Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.
  2. Exodus 21:12 “Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death.
  3. Numbers 35:16 “If a man strikes someone with an iron object so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.
  4. Romans 13:1 “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”
  5. Romans 13:3-4 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. 4For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
  6. 1st Peter 2:3 “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority”
Based on the above Scripter, how can any Bible believing Christian deny that God is in favor of capital punishment? God’s Word makes it clear that the government has the God given right to execute a murder or for any other serious crime that the state feels is justified for the offence. The only exception to the government using capital punishment is when it comes into direct conflict with God’s Word. I don’t believe God approves of abortion even though our government makes taking the life of an unborn child legal.

If any reader disagrees with my conclusion of capital punishment based on the Bible, please check it out as the Bereans did after Paul’s teaching. :Acts 17:11“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

While the thief on the cross found pardon in the sight of God - ‘Today you will be with Me in Paradise’ - that pardon did not extend to eliminating the consequences of his crime - ‘We are being justly punished, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds.’ (Luke 23:39-43)". Neither God nor Jesus nor the Holy Spirit nor the prophets nor the apostles ever spoke out against the civil authorities’ use of executions in deserving cases - not even at the very time of Jesus’ own execution when He pardoned the sins of the thief, who was being crucified alongside Him. Indeed, quite the opposite. Their biblical support for capital punishment is consistent and overwhelming. Furthermore, Jesus never confuses the requirements of civil justice with those of either eternal justice or personal relations.

THANK YOU, GOVERNOR PETE RICKETTS!

The Governor of Nebraska, Pete Ricketts received the Rayner Goddard Act of Courage Award from the members of Unit 1012. He favors the use of the death penalty and is working to retain it in his state.

We have watched him fight for justice and the death penalty in Nebraska and want him to know that he has encouraged victims' families and leaders worldwide. We honor and respect him. We hope that more judges and government officials will follow their courageous character.

We, the members of Unit 1012: The VFFDP, send our utmost thanks and congratulation to Governor Pete Ricketts. He is our hero in showing his care and love for the murdered victims’ families. We wish that more leaders can take his leadership example and follow it. We will pray for him all the way.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has vetoed a bill that would have increased transparency in the state’s execution process. LB 238, which passed the state’s unicameral legislature on August 13, 2020 by a vote of 27-10 with 12 members present but not voting, would have allowed witnesses to see the execution from the moment the prisoner enters the death chamber until the prisoner is declared dead or the execution is halted.
In his August 17 veto message to the legislature, Ricketts claimed that the bill would have “add[ed] additional burdens to the process of carrying out the death penalty in Nebraska” and “would mandate changes to the [state’s] current execution protocol.” He said state law protects the identity of execution employees and that “[w]earing a mask or disguise in an attempt to conceal their identity could impede necessary procedures if the staff member’s eyesight is hindered or blocked.” Wearing personal protective equipment during the course of an execution “would make a mockery of the execution and show a complete lack of respect for the inmate, the inmate’s family, and for family of the victim,” Ricketts wrote.

Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy. There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief. ~ Proverbs 12:20-21 KJV

PRAYER FOR THE GOVERNOR

God shields the Governor and his family/allies with His wings and He shelters all of them with His feathers. His faithful promises are Governor Pete Ricketts armor and protection. No evil shall befall him. No weapons brandished against him shall succeed. A thousand may fall at his side and ten thousand around him, but evil cannot come near him nor touch him. Every scheme and plan is being brought into the light swiftly. What is being done in the darkness is being shouted from the rooftops. No stone will go unturned. Governor Pete Ricketts will live a long life and all will be well with him. He will prosper in his governing role over Nebraska and Nebraska is prospering as a result. The blood of Jesus covers him while he remains hidden in Christ.
We bind every assassination & death spirit and we command the life and power of Jesus Christ. We strike the plans of the enemy with confusion and we strike them with blindness. We decree VICTORY over Governor Pete Ricketts. VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY in the mighty name of Jesus. We command the heavenly hosts and most powerful warrior angels to go forth now and seize those enemies. Amen.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a couple who were shot during a phony car sale that was arranged online, police say.

Joseph Roland, 39, and his wife Jossline Roland, 40, leave behind five children after they were shot dead outside an apartment complex in Aurora, Colorado, while trying to buy an SUV.

The couple were carrying $3,000 in cash to pay for the RAV4 that was advertised by Kyree Brown on app Letgo when he allegedly shot them dead and took the money after meeting them at 11pm on August 14.

Brown has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after allegedly admitting to shooting the parents, the Denver Post reported.

Aurora Police said that Brown and an unnamed friend stole a 2017 Toyota Rav4 from Denver's Montbello neighborhood.

Brown then posted an advert for the stolen car on letgo - a website for buying used goods - under a fake name, the affidavit reads.

Joe, who was an operations manager at ABM Industries and 'flipped' vehicles for a living, responded to the ad and agreed to buy the car.

He arranged to meet Brown in Southlands Mall car park with his wife, who was a firm administrator at Dianne Sawaya law offices.

Brown told investigators he drove to meet Joe at the mall but when they arrived he told the couple he had accidentally brought the wrong car title and asked them to follow him across town to an apartment on East Cornell Circle.

The two cars parked up at the address and Brown got out of his car and went to the driver's side window of the Roland's vehicle, the affidavit states.

Brown told authorities he pointed a 9mm handgun at Joe while the couple were still in their car and demanded the money.

Brown said Joe grabbed his arm and the car started moving, the affidavit states.

The suspect intentionally shot Joe before accidentally shooting Jossline, the arrest affidavit claims.

Brown then allegedly grabbed the $3,000 cash from the car dashboard, jumped back in the stolen vehicle and fled the scene.

He then tried to burn the car by pouring gasoline on the seats and setting it alight, authorities said.

Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting just before midnight and the Rolands were rushed to hospital.

The couple died within five minutes of each other, CBS Denver reported.

Police tracked down Brown by finding the letgo listing on Joe's cellphone.

Brown had used a fake name but used a Gmail account that detectives were able to link him to.

Police said that his mobile number was then found through the online goods website.

The phone had pinged towers near the mall, apartment complex where the couple were shot and the location where the car was burned, near Havana Street and East Colfax Avenue, police said.

Investigators then traced the cellphone to its current location in the 2300 block of North Elmira Street where they located Brown.

He was detained on August 27 after a short police chase, which ended near 29th Avenue and Central Park Boulevard in Denver.

The Rolands' devastated family released a statement saying they are 'in shock and disbelief' and thanking the Aurora Police Department for apprehending the suspect.

'The extended family of Joseph and Jossline Roland are still in shock and disbelief about the loss of both Jossline and Joe to a senseless act of violence,' the statement reads.

'Joe and Jossline are survived by their five children who are being loved and cared for by the extended family.'

The family statement added: 'Joe and Jossline are irreplaceable and will be dearly missed. Your continued support, respect for privacy, and prayers are most appreciated in this time of unimaginable loss and grief.'

A funeral service was held for the couple Monday and streamed virtually due to COVID-19.
A fundraiser has been set up by friend of the couple Brittany Southerland to raise funds for their five children.

It reads: 'Anyone who knew Joe and Jossline would remember they were always the first to help. They were the best people you could know and their door was always open to friends and family.

'We would like to raise money for their children. No amount of money can replace what they've lost, but maybe we can pull together and provide some financial security for them.'

Dianne Sawaya law firm paid tribute to Jossline in a statement on its website and described her death as an 'immeasurable loss'.

'Jossline Roland, the Firm Administrator, firm 'mom' and superhero tragically passed away,' it reads.

'Jossline was not only the world's best Firm Administrator, but she was also my friend and right hand. She was my 'Go-to' and confidant. She will be missed tremendously by me, the firm, and by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.'

The statement added: 'Jossline – we love you, we thank you, and may everlasting peace be upon you.'

On Friday, August 14, Joe and Jossline Roland were senselessly murdered in Aurora, CO. They leave behind five sweet children.

Anyone who knew Joe and Jossline would remember they were always the first to help.

They were the best people you could know and their door was always open to friends and family.

We would like to raise money for their children. No amount of money can replace what they’ve lost, but maybe we can pull together and provide some financial security for them.

Thank you for any amount you can contribute whether large or small. Please share as well.

Edit: I have received questions regarding my relationship to the Rolands. Joe was my husband’s best friend of 25+ years. They spoke every day. My husband is the godfather of two of the Rolands’ children. I instantly became close friends with Jossline when she began dating Joe. They were kind, fun, generous people. We have yet to meet anyone else like them and never will. They were special people who built a beautiful life and family together. Joe, Jossline, and their children are family to us. Our lives are all changed forever due to this senseless act of violence. We will miss them every day for the rest of our lives. Joe and Jossline’s main focus in life was their children, which is where our focus is as well. The family is building a trust for the children, which is where this money will be placed. We have permission from the family for this page. Thank you all for your overwhelming generosity and kindness.
