We, the VFFDP, respects Renny
Cushing’s opposition to the death penalty but we disagree with what he says and
also his abolitionist work. We would like to make a rebutting statement to him but
let us hear from him.
And
while his family wanted justice, Cushing testified that killing the man who
killed his dad wasn't the answer.
"The death penalty would not have brought my father back, it
would only further victimize another family," he said.
"If we make those who kill make us into killers, then evil triumphs. And
we all lose."
“Before my father’s murder I had evolved a set of values that included a
respect for life and an opposition to the death penalty. For me to change my
beliefs because my father was murdered would only give more power to his
killers, for they would then take not only his life but also his main legacy to
me: the values he instilled. The same is true for society. If we let murderers
turn us to murder, we give them too much power. They succeed in bringing us to
their way of thinking and acting, and we become what we say we abhor.”
REBUTTAL:
<<"The
death penalty would not have brought my father back, it would only further
victimize another family," he said. "If we make those who kill make
us into killers, then evil triumphs. And we all lose.">> Of course,
it will not bring any victim back from the dead. No punishment can, why not we
also say prison does not bring the victim back to life, we do not incarcerate them
at all.
Victimize
another family? For Renny’s case, we respect his decision. But for other VFFDP
members who want justice for their loved ones, it will not victimize them but
bring them justice for the dead.
<<"If
we make those who kill make us into killers, then evil triumphs. And we all
lose.">> When we execute those who commit murder, we are protecting
our country from violent people and providing justice to the VFFDP. No way, it
does not make us killers and evil does not triumph at all. If we let all
murderers live, evil will triumph for sure. We, the VFFDP, do not want those
murderers to re offend again. We want to protect our communities.
