Desirée Mariottini was a 16-year-old Italian
girl who was last seen on 18 October 2018 and was murdered soon after in Rome, Italy.
Background
Mariottini was born and lived in Cisterna di Latina (Latina) in the region of Lazio.
The San Lorenzo district is a
traditionally left-wing neighborhood still scarred by World
War II bombings.
Murder and investigation
On 17 October 2018, Mariottini missed
the last bus and did not return to her home.
Desirée Mariottini was drugged
unconscious and sexually abused in a drug den
in the San Lorenzo district in Rome. While Desirèe was unconscious she was
abused several times by different people. As reconstructed, she had taken drugs
as early as the afternoon of October 18, and died later on the night of 19
October. She was being abused while she was dying. This was shown by the
investigations conducted by the police in Rome and by the San Lorenzo police
station.
On 25 October two people were arrested
for the murder: Mamadou Gara 26 and Brian Minteh 43, both Senegal and
living illegally in Italy. Both are accused, along other suspects, of group
sexual violence, drug possession and voluntary homicide. The police are looking
for at least two other men involved in the murder. The criminals were
identified after a series of testimonies and findings made in the building
where the body was found.
Later, Alinno Chima, aged 40 from Nigeria was
arrested.
On 26 October 2018 a fourth arrest was
made, Yusif Salia from Gambia.
None of the arrested had legal documents to reside in Italy.
Autopsy
The autopsy has confirmed that Desirée
Mariottini was a virgin before being raped.
Trial
The trial of the four accussed began in
October 2019.
Aftermath
Mariottini was buried on Sunday 30 October
in Cisterna di Latina in a ceremony attended by hundreds and Mayor of Rome
Virginia Raggi declared a day of mourning.
Visit by
Minister Matteo Salvini at the scene of the crime
On October 24, 2018 interior minister Matteo
Salvini, the leader of the anti-migration Northern
League party, went to the abandoned building where the girl's body was
found.
Activists in the traditionally left-wing
San Lorenzo district prevented Salvini from placing a rose outside the drug den
where the victim was found and accused Salvini of exploiting her death. He
returned later in the day unannounced and placed the flowers in front of the
gate.
Pronouncements
by the President of the European
Parliament Antonio Tajani
The tragedy of Desirée "must be the
last that happens in Italy and in Rome, an abandoned city, the degradation is
evident, moral and social, more checks are needed in the city, more men and
women of the police are needed, especially at night".
The decision of the mayor of Rome
The Rome Mayor Virginia
Raggi decided to proclaim a day of mourning for the city in conjunction
with the funeral of Desirée Mariottini. She also declared the intention of city
authorities to have the building demolished. In a social media post, she stated
that as a mayor, as a woman and the mayor of the city she could not tolerate
the thought of this crime and called it an "atrocious crime".
On the evening of 25 October 2018, a
spontaneous torch-light procession by the people of Rome San Lorenzo was
organized to ask for "justice for Desirée".
Protests against the mayor of Rome
On 27 October 2018, the citizens of Rome protest against
the deterioration of the city, in which some areas such as Via Dei Lucani 22
are crumbling and abandoned to carelessness, and, above all, to criminals as
drug dealers.
Italy: African migrants charged with
drugging, raping, and murdering teenage girl appear in court
By Arthur Lyons
A group of four African migrants appeared in court
for the first time this week, facing charges of voluntary homicide, aggravated
sexual violence, and distributing illegal drugs to a minor.
The trial begins a little more than a year after
16-year-old Desirée Mariottini was discovered dead in an abandoned building in
Rome’s San Lorenzo district.
The four defendants, Alinno Chima and Mamadou Gara,
Yusef Salia, and Brian Minteh are said to have drugged, gang-raped, left
Mariottini to die alone in a drug den in a case that sent shockwaves across the
nation, Il Giornale reports.
Several witnesses, mostly homeless drug addicts,
confirmed to investigators that they had witnessed the group sexual assault
take place. An autopsy confirmed that the 16-year-old girl was a virgin before
being raped.
“Our pain can never be calmed,” said Desirée’s grandmother as she left court. “No sentence will ever give us back our Desirée,” she
added.
“I am not responsible for the death of this girl, I
ask her mother and family for forgiveness and excuse, and I respect their
pain,” Yussef Salia told the court.
Witnesses who claim they attempted to contact
emergency services but were prevented from doing so by the suspects were also
heard from. The next hearing is scheduled for January 15th.
Earlier this year in May, the African migrant drug
dealer Innocent Oseghale was found guilty of murdering and dismembering
18-year-old Pamela Mastropietro and was sentenced to life in
prison.
