Heather was very active in her school and was liked by all who knew her. She played volleyball, was a student manager for the basketball team and active in a group that performed skits with anti-drug themes for children. Heather was remembered as a "light in the darkness" during a funeral service that drew nearly 2,000 mourners. Several family members and friends sang songs and read poems. Her aunt, Peggy Carrizales, read an essay Heather wrote last Thanksgiving, expressing appreciation for her family.
"Everything
happens for a reason, whether good or bad," she wrote at the time.”
