On this date, 20 July 1987, 16-year-old Kevin Swaney and his friend, Carlos Froyan Cruz-Ramos were murdered by Daniel Wayne Cook in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Justice came 25 years later, when Daniel Cook was put to death by lethal injection in Arizona on 8 August 2012. On this date, 20 July 2006, an American murderer and rapist, Brandon Hedrick was executed by the electric chair at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, Virginia. He was convicted of the 10 May 1997 rape and murder of an African American woman, Lisa Yvonne Alexander Crider.

On this date, 20 July 2011, Mark Anthony Stroman A.K.A the 11 September Revenge Killer, was executed by lethal injection in Texas. He was convicted of murdering two Asians in 2001: Waqar Hasan, 46 (Pakistani immigrant and convenience store clerk) / Vasudev Patel, 49 (Indian immigrant and gas station owner).

On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred inside of a Century movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight screening of the film The Dark Knight Rises. A gunman, dressed in tactical clothing, set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms, killing 12 people and injuring 70 others.
