2016 NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR MURDER VICTIMS (2001 TO 2005)



National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims

            For this year’s 2016 National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, Unit 1012 will remember more than 188 murdered victims + victims of war crimes from the United States and around the world. Let us remember how they lived on this earth and treasure their memories.

Samantha Runnion

89. Samantha Bree Runnion (July 26, 1996 – July 15, 2002) was a five-year-old American murder victim. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 26, 1996, and her family were residents of Stanton, California.

90-91. On 4 August 2002, two English girls were murdered in the village of Soham, Cambridgeshire. The victims were Holly Marie Wells and Jessica Aimee Chapman, both aged 10.

Ian Kevin Huntley, a caretaker at local secondary school Soham Village College, was convicted in December 2003 of the girls' murder and sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment, with the High Court later setting a minimum term of 40 years. Huntley had disposed of the bodies near RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, where they were discovered on 17 August 2002 by a local farm worker.

His girlfriend, Maxine Ann Carr, was the girls' teaching assistant at St Andrew's Primary School. Carr had provided Huntley with a false alibi and was sentenced to 21 months in prison for perverting the course of justice.

Dru Sjodin
94. Dru Katrina Sjodin (September 26, 1981 – c. November 22, 2003) was a murder victim who was abducted from the Columbia Mall parking lot in Grand Forks, North Dakota, by Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr., on November 22, 2003. Her disappearance garnered great media coverage throughout the United States and prompted the creation of the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry.

  
Kim Sun-il
95. Kim Sun-il (September 13, 1970 – c. June 22, 2004) was a South Korean translator and Christian missionary who was kidnapped and executed in Iraq.

  
Huang Na
96. Huang Na (simplified Chinese: 黄娜; traditional Chinese: 黃娜; pinyin: Huáng Nà) (26 September 1996 – 10 October 2004) was an eight-year-old Chinese national living at the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre in Singapore, who disappeared on 10 October 2004. Her mother, the police and the community conducted a three-week-long nationwide search for her. After her body was found, many Singaporeans attended her wake and funeral, giving bai jin (帛金 bójīn, contributions towards funeral expenses) and gifts. In a high-profile 14-day trial, Malaysian-born Took Leng How (Chinese: 卓良豪; pinyin: Zhuó Liángháo), a vegetable packer at the wholesale centre, was found guilty of murdering her and hanged after an appeal and a request for presidential clemency failed.

97. 6-month-old Elias Ocean Johnson (August 22, 2004 to February 18, 2005)


Jessica Lunsford was last seen alive on the afternoon of Feb. 23, 2005. Her grandparents picked her up from the school bus stop in Homosassa, Fla. On the way home, they stopped at a Sonic restaurant to buy curly fries for Jessica before she went to Bible class. 98. Jessica Marie Lunsford (October 6, 1995 – February 27, 2005) was a nine-year-old American girl who was abducted from her home in Homosassa, Florida in the early morning of February 24, 2005. Believed held captive over the weekend, she was raped and later murdered by 46-year-old John Couey who lived nearby. The media covered the investigation and trial of her killer extensively. On August 24, 2007, a judge in Inverness, Florida sentenced Couey, a convicted sex offender, to death for kidnapping, sexually battering, and first degree murder of Jessica.

101-102. On this date, June 20, 2005, a couple, Javad Jay Marshall Fields and Vivian Wolfe were both gunned down in Aurora, Colorado. Robert Ray and Sir Mario Owens were both sentenced to death.

   

Sally Anne Bowman
103. Sally Anne Bowman born (11 September 1987 – 25 September 2005), an up and coming British model. She was robbed, raped and murdered near her home in Croydon, South London, two weeks after her 18th birthday.

PC Sharon Beshenivsky
105. PC Sharon Beshenivsky (14 January 1967–18 November 2005) was a West Yorkshire Police constable shot dead by a criminal gang during a robbery in Bradford on 18 November 2005, becoming the seventh female police officer in Great Britain to be killed on duty.
