2016 NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE FOR MURDER VICTIMS (1991 TO 2000)



 
National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims
  
            For this year’s 2016 National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims, Unit 1012 will remember more than 188 murdered victims + victims of war crimes from the United States and around the world. Let us remember how they lived on this earth and treasure their memories.

            For this observance, we will present murdered victims from 1900 to 1990:

  

Denise Huber

Doctor Victor Chang
53. Victor Peter Chang, AC (born Chang Yam Him; 21 November 1936 – 4 July 1991), was a Chinese Australian cardiac surgeon and a pioneer of modern heart transplantation. Born in Shanghai to Australian-born Chinese parents, he grew up in Hong Kong before moving to Australia. After completing his medical studies at the University of Sydney and working in St Vincent's Hospital, he trained in England and the United States as a surgeon before returning to Australia. In St Vincent's Hospital, he helped establish the National Cardiac Transplant Unit, the country's leading centre for heart and lung transplants. Chang's team had a high success rate in performing heart transplantations and he pioneered the development of an artificial heart valve.

In 1986, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for his "service to international relations between Australia and China and to medical science". In 1991, Chang died after being shot in a failed extortion attempt against him. His legacy includes the creation of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, being voted Australian of the Century at the People's Choice Awards, and the establishment of the Victor Chang Lowy Packer Building in St Vincent's Hospital.

55. Ebony Simpson (August 6, 1983 to August 19, 1992)

  

56-57. The murder of Jennifer "Jenny" Ertman and Elizabeth Peña, two teenage girls from Houston, Texas, occurred on June 24, 1993. The murder of the two girls made headlines in Texas newspapers due to the nature of the crime and the new law resulting from the murder that allows families of the victims to view the execution of the murderers.

  

Polly Klaas
58. Polly Hannah Klaas (January 3, 1981 – October 1, 1993) is an American murder victim whose case gained national attention. At the age of twelve, she was kidnapped at knife point from her mother's home during a slumber party in Petaluma, California, on October 1, 1993. She was later strangled. Richard Allen Davis was convicted of her murder in 1996 and sentenced to death.

61. The murder of Megan Kanka (December 7, 1986 – July 29, 1994) occurred in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The seven-year-old was raped and murdered by her neighbor Jesse Timmendequas. The murder attracted national attention and subsequently led to the introduction of "Megan's Law", which requires law enforcement to disclose details relating to the location of registered sex offenders.

Tracie Joy McBride
63. Private Tracie Joy McBride was murdered by Louis Jones, Jr on February18, 1995. He was executed by lethal injection in Texas on March 18, 2003. We, the comrades of Unit 1012, will remember how Tracie live and not remember how she died. We encourage people to donate money to the Tracie Joy McBride Scholarship Fund

  

Jimmy Ryce
64. Samuel James "Jimmy" Ryce (September 26, 1985 – September 11, 1995) was a child who was abducted, raped and killed by Juan Carlos Chavez in Redland, Florida, United States. On Wednesday, February 12, 2014, Chavez was executed at Florida State Prison in North Florida.

65. Thien Minh Ly, a Vietnamese American who was murdered by Gunner Lindberg due to a hate crime on January 28, 1996.

JonBenét Ramsey
68. JonBenét Patricia Ramsey (August 6, 1990 – December 25, 1996) was an American child beauty pageant queen who was murdered in her home in Boulder, Colorado, in 1996. The six-year-old's body was found in the basement of the family home about eight hours after she was reported missing during a police search of her home. She had been struck on the head and strangled. The case remains unsolved, even after several grand jury hearings, and continues to generate public and media interest.

Frank Meziere
72. Frank Meziere (July 31, 1974 to March 26, 1988)

James Byrd, Jr.
73. James Byrd, Jr. (May 2, 1949 – June 7, 1998) was an African-American who was murdered by three men, of whom at least two were white supremacists, in Jasper, Texas, on June 7, 1998. Shawn Berry, Lawrence Russell Brewer, and John King dragged Byrd for three miles behind a pick-up truck along an asphalt road. Byrd, who remained conscious throughout most of the ordeal, was killed when his body hit the edge of a culvert, severing his right arm and head. The murderers drove on for another mile before dumping his torso in front of an African-American cemetery in Jasper. Byrd's lynching-by-dragging gave impetus to passage of a Texas hate crimes law. It later led to the federal Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, commonly known as the Matthew Shepard Act, which passed on October 22, 2009, and which President Barack Obama signed into law on October 28, 2009.

Lawrence Russell Brewer was executed by lethal injection for this crime by the state of Texas on September 21, 2011. King remains on Texas' death row while appeals are pending, while Berry was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Rachel Scott in 1997
75. Rachel Joy Scott (August 5, 1981 – April 20, 1999) was an American student and the first murder victim of the Columbine High School massacre, which claimed the lives of 12 students and a teacher, as well as both perpetrators.
She has since been the subject of several books and is the inspiration for Rachel's Challenge, a nationwide school outreach program for the prevention of teen violence, based on her life and writings.

  
Cassie René Bernall
76. Cassie René Bernall (November 6, 1981 - April 20, 1999) was a student killed in the Columbine High School massacre, at age 17.

80-81. Kleber Santos and his wife, Lilian – A Brazilian couple who were murdered by Michael Adam Sigala on August 22, 2000. He was executed by the state of Texas on March 2, 2010.
