TUNISIAN PRESIDENT KAIS SAIED SUPPORTS THE RETURN OF THE DEATH PENALTY (SEPTEMBER 28, 2020)

“There is one other consideration which I believe should never be overlooked. If the criminal law of this country is to be respected, it must be in accordance with public opinion, and public opinion must support it. That goes very nearly to the root of this question of capital punishment. I cannot believe or the public opinion (or would I rather call it the public conscience) of this country will tolerate that persons who deliberately condemn others to painful and, it may be, lingering deaths should be allow to live…”  - Rayner Goddard [Speech in the House of Lords, 28 April 1948]

Tunisia President Kais Saied backs death penalty amid outrage over woman’s murder

Dozens take part in protest in front of presidential palace in the Carthage

Abu Dhabi: Tunisia’s President Kais Saied has said he backs capital punishment, after widespread outrage over a woman’s murder sparked calls for executions to restart following a three-decade-long suspension, local media reported.

“Anyone who kills a person for no reason deserves the death penalty,” Saied told the nation’s security council late Monday, according to a video posted by the presidency.

Many people in Tunisia are demanding that the death penalty be reintroduced for such crimes, while the country’s human-rights organisations are strongly resisting such calls. There have been demands for Tunisian President Kais Saied to bring back the death penalty, with some claiming that its abolition has led to an increase in violent crimes.

Dozens, most of them women, organised a protest in front of the presidential palace in the Carthage on Saturday, calling on Saied to “implement the execution.”

Some of them chanted: “Today is Rahma (the murdered woman), and tomorrow we are.” A woman said: “We will not be silent about the right of our children.” The crime sparked widespread controversy on social media, and civil society organisations described it as “hideous.”

Tunisia carried out its last execution in 1991, according to Amnesty International, but death by hanging remains on the statue books of the North African nation.

Convicts have regularly been handed death sentences in recent years -- mainly in trials related to national security -- but a moratorium on carrying out the punishment has been in place.

Around a hundred people are currently on death row, according to anti-torture rights activists.

“Each society has its choices, we have our principles, and the text is there,” Saied added.

A recent murder revived the debate on the death penalty.

The body of a 29-year-old woman, who had disappeared after leaving work, was discovered last week dumped in a ditch near a highway that runs from the capital Tunis to the suburb of Marsa.

A man was swiftly arrested and reportedly confessed to strangling her and stealing her phone, according to the interior ministry.

The victim’s father has demanded that her killer be executed.

The justice ministry said that the suspect had been accused in an earlier murder case that was dismissed, without giving further details.

“If it is proven that he has killed one or more people, I don’t think the solution is .. not to apply the death penalty,” Saied added.

Tunisia had recently told the UN Human Rights Committee it would launch a debate on the possible abolition of the death penalty.

Rights groups criticised Saied’s comments.

“The remarks made by Kais Saied are very worrying,” said Chokri Latif, head of the Tunisian Coalition against the Death Penalty. “They open the door to barbarism.”

Amnesty International said the president’s comments were “shocking” and that resuming executions would be “a slap in the face of all the human rights progress” Tunisia had made.

“There is no credible evidence to show that the death penalty deters crime more effectively than a prison term following a fair trial,” Amnesty’s deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, Amna Guellali, said in a statement.

Saied, a socially conservative law professor, was elected to power in October last year.

Latif criticised what he called a “populist position on such a delicate question”.

The activist expressed concern that the president was drawing on Islamic law rather than the constitution, which could set a precedent to “justify many further setbacks in the area of rights”.

Tunisia has executed some 135 people since independence in 1956, the majority for political reasons, Latif said.

OHIO STATE PAROLE BOARD RELEASING TWO CONVICTED KILLERS

We, the members of Unit 1012, are truly well aware that once the death penalty is abolished, the Marxist-ACLU Demons will want to end LWOP.

We, DO NOT TRUST them at all and we know that they are nothing but liars who value the lives of murderers and evildoers, with the plan on putting innocent people’s lives at risk of getting murdered.

Despite the pleas of family members of two murder victims, the Ohio Parole Board announced this week it will release two men convicted in the killings — one in Boardman in 1982 and one in Youngstown in 1985. Bear in mind, no Prisoner Rights Activists complained about their released.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The state Parole Board Wednesday held video hearings with families in two local murder cases appealing earlier decisions to free inmates convicted for the deaths of their loved ones.

The parole board upheld an earlier decision to release James Hall, 67. He has been serving a sentence of 25 years to 100 years on charges of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary for the July 25, 1982, shooting death of Douglas Skica, 28, at a home in the Sherwood Forest area in Boardman.

The parole board also heard an appeal by the family of Mohammed Awadalla, 28, who was shot and killed during a robbery at a 740 Broadway Ave. store on the North Side. Willie Riley, 55, is serving a sentence of 18 years to life on a murder charge with a firearm specification for Awadalla’s death. That appeal was also upheld.

Usually, the hearings are held in Columbus, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, family members participated via video from the meeting room of the Mahoning County Commissioners in the basement of the courthouse.

Hall was one of four men authorities charged for the murder of Skica. Reports at the time said Skica’s father, Douglas Sr., who once owned a Sandwich Factory restaurant and another business, was attacked about 1:30 a.m. in his drive after he was followed home from work.

Two of the attackers forced their way inside the home and at some point Skica, a former Canfield High linebacker who played in college with former Pittsburgh Steelers legend Jack Lambert at Kent State, confronted one of the attackers. The other attacker then fired a shot and killed Skica.

Inside the home at the time was another brother as well as Skica’s mother.

Present for the hearing was his brother, Daniel Skica; his wife Debbie; and their daughter, Erica. Afterward, they said they were disappointed, but the fact Hall will be under strict supervision for the next five years makes it easier to take. Daniel Skica did not live in the family home at the time of his brother’s death.

“It’s fair,” Daniel Skica said. “I wish they could keep him in prison.”

Daniel Skica said his brother loved sports and was a giving person.

“He was the type of person who would just rip his heard out and give it to you if you needed it,” Daniel Skica said. “The love he shared was unmatched.”

Debbie Skica said her brother in law was especially close to his parents.

“Every night, before he went to bed, he would give his mom and dad a kiss,” she said.

The attack and death of his brother took a big toll on their family. The elder Skica lost both his businesses, and the family lost their home. Skica’s mother lived with Daniel Skica for several years, and they were afraid to stay at their home. Douglas Sr. was diagnosed later in life with dementia and the pistol-whipping he took the night of the attack was a contributing factor, Daniel Skica said.

“It traumatized them and everything for the family went downhill from there,” Daniel Skica said of his brother’s murder.

Erica Skica said even as a grandchild who was not alive when her uncle was murdered, she could still feel the pain and grief from her grandmother,

“You could feel every inch — you could picture it and put yourself there,” Erica Skica said.

A relative of Awadalla’s was present for Riley’s hearing but declined to speak to a reporter.

Awadalla’s wife found Awadalla shot just after 11 p.m. Nov. 5, 1985. They lived in an apartment above the D&D Market which Awadalla ran.

Although Riley and three other suspects had left by the time police arrived, two men were looting the store and screaming at Awadalla’s wife when the first officers arrived on the scene. One of those officers was current police Chief Robin Lees.

Those two men were arrested.

Awadalla’s wife heard the shots from upstairs, discovered her husband’s body, and called police.

Life without parole should not be a default in this process. All other less punitive sentencing options should be thoroughly explored. A blanket move from death to life without parole would ignore the facts of each case and the redemption that each person is capable of achieving.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE 4 LITTLE GIRLS OF 16TH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

On this date, September 15, 1963, four children were killed in the bombing of an African-American church in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. We, the members of Unit 1012: The VFFDP, will make them four of The 82 murdered children of Unit 1012, where we will not forget them.

The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing was a white supremacist terrorist bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday, September 15, 1963. Four members of a local Ku Klux Klan chapter planted 19 sticks of dynamite attached to a timing device beneath the steps located on the east side of the church.

Described by Martin Luther King Jr. as "one of the most vicious and tragic crimes ever perpetrated against humanity", the explosion at the church killed four girls and injured between 14 and 22 other people.

Although the FBI had concluded in 1965 that the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing had been committed by four known Klansmen and segregationists: Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr., Herman Frank Cash, Robert Edward Chambliss, and Bobby Frank Cherry, no prosecutions were conducted until 1977, when Robert Chambliss was tried and convicted of the first-degree murder of one of the victims, 11-year-old Carol Denise McNair.

In a revival of effort by states and the federal government to prosecute cold cases from the civil rights era, the state conducted trials in the early 21st century of Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr. and Bobby Cherry, who were each convicted of four counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Future United States Senator Doug Jones successfully prosecuted Blanton and Cherry. Herman Cash had died in 1994, and was never charged with his alleged involvement in the bombing.

The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing marked a turning point in the United States during the civil rights movement and contributed to support for passage by Congress of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Four girls, Addie Mae Collins (age 14, born April 18, 1949); Carol Denise McNair (age 11, born November 17, 1951); Carole Rosanond Robertson (age 14, born April 24, 1949); and Cynthia Dionne Wesley (age 14, born April 30, 1949), were killed in the attack. The explosion was so intense that one of the girls' bodies was decapitated and so badly mutilated that her body could be identified only through her clothing and a ring. Another victim was killed by a piece of mortar embedded in her skull. The pastor of the church, the Reverend John Cross, recollected in 2001 that the girls' bodies were found "stacked on top of each other, clung together". All four girls were pronounced dead on arrival at the Hillman Emergency Clinic.

4 Little Girls is a 1997 American historical documentary film about the September 15, 1963 murder of four African-American girls (Addie May Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Rosamond Robertson) in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. It was directed by Spike Lee and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary.
The events inspired the 1964 song "Birmingham Sunday" by Richard and Mimi Fariña. The song was used in the opening sequence of the film, as sung by Joan Baez, Mimi's sister. They also inspired the 1963 tune "Alabama" by John Coltrane which is also included in the soundtrack.
4 Little Girls premiered Wednesday, June 25, 1997 at the Guild 50th Street Theatre in New York City. It was produced by 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks, Lee's production company, and Home Box Office (HBO).
In 2017, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

IMRAN KHAN PROPOSES CHEMICAL CASTRATION AND HANGING OF RAPISTS

We, the members of Unit 1012: The VFFDP, who are families and friends of murder victims, support the Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan, in his proposal to give rapists public hanging or chemical castration.

Imran Khan proposes chemical castration, public hanging of rapists

Pakistan prime minister argued the case for a grading system for rapes and sexual assault cases along the lines of the standard first, second and third-degree classification in place for murder cases

world Updated: Sep 15, 2020 10:18 IST

Hindustan Times, Islamabad

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for a full-fledged crackdown on rapists and other sex offenders in the country, proposing chemical castration for those found guilty in rape cases to ensure they don’t become repeat offenders. He has also called for a national register that can keep track of sex offenders.

On Monday, Khan told a regional TV news channel that he feels chemical castration of rapists is urgently needed or at least the culprits should be made to forcefully undergo surgery so that they don’t commit sexual crimes in future.

The Pakistan prime minister argued the case for a grading system for rapes and sexual assault cases along the lines of the standard first, second and third-degree classification in place for murder cases.

Khan, who was speaking on a recent incident of gang-rape in Lahore that sparked nationwide outrage, said, “Those who are in first degree, they should be castrated and operated upon to disable them from repeating such crimes.”

He proposed setting up a three-pronged strategy to deal with rapes and other sexual abuse cases, starting with the registration of sex offenders and paedophiles.

Another step, Khan said, to deal with rapists and child sex abusers, was to hand them exemplary punishments. He called for hanging them in public as punishment for scarring the lives of the victims and their families.

The Pakistan PM said it wasn’t possible for the administration to know exactly how many rape cases occur across the country, adding that such crimes were routinely under-reported.

However, on the topic of public hanging of rapists, Khan said his government believes that such a form of punishment was unlikely to be accepted by the global community, and could even jeopardise the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) that is extended to Pakistan by the European Union.

Pakistan’s PM calls for rapists, paedophiles to be publicly hanged, castrated

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for convicted rapists and paedophiles to be publicly hanged or chemically castrated for their crimes.

Provoked by a nationwide outcry over the gang rape of a mother in front of her children, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for the public execution or castration of convicted rapists and paedophiles.

Last week, a woman was raped by two men after she ran out of petrol and her car broke down on a highway near Lahore.

She was sexually assaulted and robbed, with her two children present, while waiting for police to arrive, sparking an outpouring of anger that has shone a light on sexual violence against women.

In a televised interview with
Hard Talk Pakistan where he was questioned over the brutal incident, the leader and former cricket star said his government had explored a number of punishments for perpetrators of such crimes.

“I think he (the culprit) should be hanged in a public square. Rapists and child molesters should undergo public hanging,” Mr Khan said.

“You do not know the real statistics as well, because it’s under-reported. People do not report it as they are scared or are ashamed, women are ashamed, no one wants to speak.”

Public hanging, the PM acknowledged, would not be “internationally acceptable” and could affect Pakistan’s trade status with the European Union.

As an alternative to the death penalty, he suggested an alternative punishment: to “chemically or surgically castrate” rapists, depending on the severity of the crime.

“The way there is first-degree, second-degree, third-degree murder, this should be graded in the same way. When there is first degree (rape), castrate them. Make them unable to do this,” the 67-year-old said.

During the National Assembly yesterday, Mr Khan said that his cabinet is working on introducing new measures so that sex offenders realise they will face serious consequences for their crimes.

His comments were greeted with widespread approval on social media, as shock over the attack on the unnamed woman, believed to be French, continues.

Comments by Lahore police chief, Umar Sheikh, only heightened the nation’s fury, after he appeared to blame the woman, declaring she should have known better than to travel at night.

An investigation into the rape by Lahore Police is ongoing, with three men arrested, including one of the alleged rapists.

The other man involved, described by police as the mastermind of the group and believed to have been accused of gang rape before, has so far evaded arrest.
