The Ohio
State University psychology major whom police believe was murdered by a
registered sex offender was a straight A student excited about May graduation.
Reagan Tokes,
21, of Columbus, Ohio, vanished after leaving work at a local bar on February
8. Her frantic family members and friends circulated missing posts on social
media. Then, a coroner confirmed that a body found shot to death in a nearby
park is Tokes.
That left a
shaken community and campus wondering: Who killed the vivacious young woman?
Police now have an answer: They’ve arrested a registered sex offender named Brian
Lee Golsby, and they say they believe the attack was random.
“Of all the
people in this world we find ourselves asking why her?” wrote one friend on a
GoFundMe site established to help Tokes’ family.

The legacy of
Reagan Tokes will live on at Ohio State through a scholarship fund established
in her name.
The Reagan
Delaney Tokes Memorial Foundation, set up by her parents following her death,
will donate $50,000 to the university to fund a scholarship.
The gift is
meant to “honor her legacy, her kind giving heart, and her love of life,
others, and of Ohio State,” according to Board of Trustee documents.
The
scholarship is intended for undergraduate students, with preference for those
majoring in psychology, which was Tokes’ major.
Her memorial foundation’s website
says, “Through this memorial fund, multiple ongoing scholarship
opportunities are awarded annually so motivated students like Reagan who wish
to pursue their dream of a college education are supported to do so.”
Tokes was set
to graduate last May before being kidnapped and killed by Brian Golsby, who is
currently awaiting trial.
At the
graduation ceremony, Tokes was posthumously honored with a degree.
The
scholarship fund in her name was approved by the Board’s Advancement Committee.
It is pending full Board approval Friday.

A year after
Reagan Tokes’ disappearance, pain lingers and questions remain

COLUMBUS
(WCMH) — In the year that has passed since the murder of Ohio State University
student Reagan Tokes, detectives have been putting evidence together, attorneys
have been preparing for a trial, and legislators have proposed changes in state
law.
Prosecutors
say Tokes was kidnapped February 8, 2017 after leaving work at Bodega, a
restaurant in the Short North. Her body was found the next day at Scioto Grove
Metro Park in Grove City.
The trial of
Brian Golsby is scheduled to start later this month. Prosecutors say they have
DNA evidence as well as GPS data from Golsby’s ankle monitor that will show his
movements the night of the murder.
Golsby had
been released from prison a few months despite a record of dozens of incidents
of bad behavior while incarcerated.
On campus at
Ohio State, even though a year has passed the murder is still in the
consciousness of many students including Bri Santilli, a junior from Canton.
“The
story kind of affected how I do things – to be more cautious at night,”
Santilli said. “I think it was such a big eye opener
for everyone.”
While
Golsby’s trial date approaches, state lawmakers continue work on some criminal
justice reforms to address what they see as shortcomings that allowed Golsby to
be released from prison.
Parents Toby
and Lisa McCrary-Tokes are supportive of the effort at the Ohio Statehouse and
have said they are determined to find some good in Reagan’s murder despite
their pain.
“You
never get over it,” McCrary-Tokes said in September. “It never goes away for us or any other members of our
family. It’s always there.”
The Tokes
family has also created the Reagan Tokes Memorial Foundation which is funding a
number of scholarships including one recently created at The Ohio State
